Christmas Memory

When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I had a girl friend who lived down the street from me, whose parents owned race horses. We spent a lot of time playing at her house. She was an only child and as we had mostly boys in the neighborhood , Teresa and I spent many afternoons playing in her play house or in the horse trailers on her property. The horses however were not gentle and we didn't go around them at all but would stand on the fences and watch them run around the pens where they worked them.
A couple days before Christmas, they pulled up to my house with a horse drawn sleigh. It was a picture perfect night complete with softly falling snow. The horses had bells on their harnesses and we rode through the country roads tucked under warm blankets for an hour or so looking at Christmas lights. It was magical! Afterward, we went back to Teresa's house and had hot cocoa and animal cookies. I remember that we drank our hot chocolate out of real pretty tea cups with saucers. What a special memory their family gave to me. I have never forgotten it! Anyone else have any special memories of Christmas?

I remember all of the yummy treats that would be around our house leading up to Christmas. I loved helping decorate the house and the tree, and listening to old Christmas music. I remember the year we talked Rich into playing his trumpet to wake everyone up!

Also the year that Ed Castelaw broke his leg and couldn't dress up as Santa to come to grandpa and grandma's. Us older grandkids helped with the gifts and I think Rich and Jim hid the bag Santa bag and left it on the front steps or something and rang the bell and ran off and we told the younger kids that Santa had to do a quick Christmas drop and run because he was so busy. That was the first Christmas I remeber feeling excitement about seeing the younger ones enjoy themselves and that Christmas wasn't all about the presents I received anymore. It was so fun to see their happy faces!

What a fun memory, Mel. The thing I remember most about Christmas around our house was staying up Christmas Eve until the wee hours of the morning playing Uno with my siblings. It was always much too exciting to sleep so we had to find something else to occupy ourselves. Also, lots of baking and Christmas goodies. We'd always deliver treats on Christmas Eve and then go to one family's house (the Merten's) at the end of our deliveries and sing carols and visit. I hope our kids have as good of memories as I did growing up.

My favorite thing about Christmas was when Tuck and I would wake up waaay too early, and we'd have to ask if it was ok to open presents yet. No one else would want to wake up yet, so we would have to wait FOREVER for everyone else to get up. We would go through our stockings and wait impatiently. We would creep down the hall and tap on doors to see if anyone was ready yet. Those were the days...

Oh wait...we still do that :)

When I was a kid we could go downstairs into the family room and get our stockings off the fireplace but then had to go back up stairs to our bedrooms untill mom and dad woke up. It seemed like they would torture us for hours untill they would let us go down into the front room where the tree and gifts were. It always seemed so huge! With six children even if you only got a few things, it always looked like alot. My mom loved Christmas! Our house was decorated like a florest shop! It was always beautiful!
